The Health Benefits of Pasture-Raised Meats

Before we dive into the delectable world of Asian Style Meatballs, it's essential to understand the health benefits of pasture-raised meats. Unlike conventionally raised meats, pasture-raised meats come from animals that are allowed to graze and forage in open fields, living a more natural life. This lifestyle affects the quality of the meat in several ways:

  1. Leaner Meat: Pasture-raised animals have leaner meat because of their active lifestyle and varied diet. This means that the meat is lower in saturated fats, which are linked to various health issues.
  2. Higher Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Studies have shown that pasture-raised meats contain higher levels of beneficial Omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are known to support heart health, reduce inflammation, and improve brain function.
  3. More Nutrients: Pasture-raised meats are richer in essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals. For example, they contain higher levels of vitamins A, E, and B vitamins, as well as important minerals like zinc and iron.
  4. No Added Hormones or Antibiotics: We here at Family Friendly Farms avoid using added hormones or antibiotics, which can have negative implications for human health.
  5. Ethical and Sustainable: Choosing pasture-raised meats also aligns with ethical and sustainable agricultural practices, promoting animal welfare and environmental conservation.

Cooking Tips

Pasture-raised meats require a bit of special care to bring out their best flavors and textures. One of the key techniques for cooking pasture-raised meats is to cook them low and slow. This gentle approach ensures that the meat remains tender, moist, and flavorful.

  1. Use High-Quality Ingredients: Start with the best pasture-raised meat you can find. In this recipe, we use a combination of FFF Ground Beef and FFF Ground Pork to achieve a balanced and delicious flavor.
  2. Seasoning is Key: The ingredients like Oyster Sauce, Rice Vinegar, Chopped Green Onions, Salt, Pepper, Onion Powder, and Garlic are carefully selected to elevate the dish. Oyster sauce adds umami, rice vinegar provides a subtle tanginess, and green onions and garlic offer freshness and depth of flavor.
  3. Don't Overmix: When mixing the ingredients, be gentle and avoid overworking the meat. Overmixing can lead to tough meatballs.
  4. Size Matters: Form your meatballs into uniform sizes to ensure even cooking. Aim for golf ball-sized meatballs for this recipe.
  5. Fry to Perfection: Pan-frying the meatballs until they turn golden brown provides a delicious outer crust while retaining juiciness inside.

Ingredients

  • FFF Ground Beef and FFF Ground Pork: These pasture-raised meats provide a perfect balance of flavors, combining the richness of beef with the tenderness of pork.
  • Oyster Sauc: Oyster sauce contributes a deep, savory umami flavor to the meatballs.
  • Rice Vinegar: Rice vinegar adds a gentle tanginess that brightens up the dish.
  • Chopped Green Onions: Green onions provide a fresh, mild onion flavor and a pop of color.
  • Salt and Pepper: These common seasonings enhance the overall taste and help balance the flavors.
  • Onion Powder and Garlic: These ingredients add layers of aromatic goodness and depth to the meatballs.
  • Soy Sauce: Soy sauce offers a savory and salty flavor base for the sauce.
  • Brown Sugar: Brown sugar provides a touch of sweetness to balance the saltiness of the soy sauce.
  • Orange Juice: Freshly squeezed orange juice adds a citrusy, zesty note that brightens the sauce.
  • Corn Starch: Cornstarch is used as a thickening agent to give the sauce its desired consistency.

List of Tools

1. Mixing bowls
2. A pan for frying the meatballs
3. A saucepan for preparing the sauce
4. A whisk for stirring the sauce
5. A spoon for mixing and shaping the meatballs
6. A thermometer to check the meatball's internal temperature

How to Make Asian Style Meatballs - Step by Step

  1. Start by defrosting the pasture-raised meat. Place it in a mixing bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the defrosted meat with the rest of the ingredients – Oyster Sauce, Rice Vinegar, Chopped Green Onions, Salt, Pepper, Onion Powder, and Garlic. Gently mix the ingredients to ensure even distribution.
  3. Shape the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs. The uniform size will ensure even cooking (we love using a cookie scoop for this step!).
  4. Heat a pan over medium heat and add a small amount of oil. Once the oil is hot, add the meatballs and cook them until they turn golden brown on all sides. This should take approximately 10-15 minutes.
  5. While the meatballs are cooking, prepare the sauce. In a separate saucepan, combine Soy Sauce, Oyster Sauce, Brown Sugar, and freshly squeezed Orange Juice. Heat the mixture over low heat until it starts to simmer, and then turn off the heat.
  6. In a small bowl, mix the Corn Starch with a small amount of water to create a slurry.
  7. Stir the slurry into the sauce mixture and return it to low heat. Stir continuously until the sauce thickens to the desired consistency. It should coat the back of a spoon. Once done, set the sauce aside and let it cool.
  8. As the sauce cools, so should the meatballs. Let them cool for a few minutes to allow the juices to redistribute and enhance their flavor.
  9. Serve your delicious meatballs over rice or noodles. Drizzle the sauce on top for that perfect finishing touch and feel free to add veggies on the side!
  10. Enjoy your Asian Style Meatballs!

How to Store

If you have leftovers, store the meatballs and sauce separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator. They should stay fresh for up to three days. Reheat the meatballs in the oven or microwave and warm the sauce on the stovetop before serving.

Variations on the Recipe

  • Spice it Up: Add some red pepper flakes or chili sauce to the sauce for a spicy kick.
  • Vegetarian Option: Substitute the meat with firm tofu or a meat substitute for a vegetarian version.
  • Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free soy sauce or tamari to make the recipe gluten-free.
  • Nutty Twist: Garnish with chopped peanuts or cashews for added texture and flavor.
